Have you considered homeschool for your children? I have! Ever since I knew I wanted kids and I figured I would homeschool because I didn’t have the best experience in private/public schools I prefer the idea of keeping my children home. Gracelyn is only 20 months but it’s never too early to start a consistent schedule and begin learning and most importantly I get to spend quality time with her.
I’m a part-time stay at home mom. I work 20 hours outside of the home; sometimes more & sometimes less. That means I spend the majority of my week with my precious, precocious toddler Gracelyn Mae.
While I don’t want to over-schedule a toddler, I also want to provide some structure and routine to her day. I also believe play is important but that we can make it educational at times as well.
Using a Loop Schedule
We like to follow a loop schedule for our “homeschooling.” I found out about the loop schedule from The Places We Learn. What I like about the loop schedule is the flexibility. There are days we don’t do any of our activities. Let’s face it with a toddler we aren’t doing workbooks or anything strenuous. I’m not a planner person so the loop system works well for us. I bought a composition notebook and we just check off the activities for the day.
Curriculum Recommendations
As far as our “curriculum” if you can call it that I used a couple of sources:
- Married Momma Melissa listed out a pretty comprehensive 18-24 Month Toddler Curriculum.
- Sonlight has a Preschool Package that we used to build our home library. It is geared towards 3+ but Gracelyn enjoys the longer stories and pulls out her favorites like “Horton Hatches the Egg.”
- The Homegrown Preschooler has a curriculum I found used in a facebook homeschool b/s/t group called A Year of Playing Skillfully. We haven’t done much from this but I love the ideas and can’t wait to use it as Gracelyn gets older!
The great thing about a loop schedule is it’s flexibility! If we don’t get to everything one day we just pick up where we left off the next. With rigid daily schedules I would be stressed if we didn’t complete everything. Stressed is not how I want to feel when I’m homeschooling a toddler! It should be a fun experience for everyone.
